| Performance Notes: |
"Is this Heaven?"..."No, It's Iowa." Gabes Oasis 5/6/04
Just a two hour drive and there we were...Iowa City. The University of Iowa has a beautiful campus and Iowa City is a really nice midwestern town.
With a little help we found Gabes and an unbelievable parking spot.
Gabes Oasis is kind of a dive to be brutally honest. But it does have character...and the 2nd worst bartender in the world downstairs...Not much of a multi-tasker this guy...But eventually, we got the first of our Blue Moons and Red Stripes and off to the beer garden we went.
The beer garden was Cool and the Gang...Picnic tables surrounded by a tree-lined fence...Nice vibe in the garden. We were getting a kick out of the scraggly old hippy smoking the bowl in the corner...Plus the backstage door was up a short staircase accessable to anyone in the beergarden. (This will come into play later.)
The door upstairs opened around 9 and we headed up to find a table. We found a nice spot (the place was pretty sparsely populated early on) and got comfortable.
The Red Walls hit the stage and I think most were impressed. The guy (kid) who did a lot of the singing sounded like a combination of Bob Dylan and John Lennon...It was a little bit eerie as a matter of fact...The Band was tight and very, very Beatlesque...But I thought they were excellent. I bought the CD...
When the Red Walls finished, the crew made short work out of tearing them down and preparing for the Mud...Seemed like it didn't take any time at all.
Next thing you know a sleeveless Chris Robinson appears from the backstage door (that basically opened up right on to the stage) and "Mother of Stone" sets the tone for the evening...
The first three songs took up more than a half an hour and it sounded incredible...Mother of Stone,Hi Speed Transportation City Limit Blues, Girl From a Mountain...It was fantastic....
By the way, I am a big fan of the old line-up. Saw them 3 times and thought they couldn't get any better...But the new line-up proved me wrong. Audley is the man. Steve is incredible. Rob is perfect for this band. George is , well, George...as good as ever and me thinks Mr. Robinsons' been practicing his rythym guitar...This band is Tight...they Rock Out...and they Jam, JAM, JAM!
Back to the show...By the 5th or 6th song Everyone was moving and grooving and enjoying the moment when the backstage door swung open. To the amazement of everyone(especially Chris from the look on his face,) a drunken college aged couple stumbled in the door onto the stage. Now instead of turning around and going back out the door they came in, they blundered forward, bumping into Audley and stepping off the front of the stage...This of course brought the show to a stand still. For a moment I thought laser beams would shoot out of Chris's eyes and the offending coulple would simply disitegrate like a drummer from Spinal Tap...But instead, he said..."YOUR MAMA!" He said some other things too, but nothing too extreme or mean...Not like the old Chris anyway...
The show resumed and all was well...The highlights for me were "Mother of Stone," "Stealin," "Sin City," "Got Love If You Want It," Detour," and "Ride" was absolutley the "Stickiest of the Icky!"
What a night! For those of you who haven't seen them yet, you're in for a treat....[Dogs Arms]
P.S. To me, this shows "Sound" was incredible...There were 2 tapers there...This will be one to have if you can get your hands on it...
