| Performance Notes: |

Its 5:24 AM and I just drove back 3.5 hours from the show. Let me start from the beginning. A few hours before the show started my brother and me went down to Waterloo Records and as we were walking out, Chris, Audley, and George walked in. I very briefly told George and Audley I was looking forward to tonight's show, George then talked to me for a minute or two then I headed out. The show was at La Zona Roas, I don't think there was much advertising for this show because there was probably only 300 people there. The show was suppose to start at 8 but did not begin until closer to 8:45 or so. There were 2 openers, this show was part of a charity event, sponsored by Gibson Guitars, to help support cancer research or something like that. The first opener was Nick Sterling, a 13 year old guitar prodigy. This kid tore it up, he had a drummer and bass player and they did 2 originals and tons of covers. This kid played Van Halen, Cream, & Rush, he hit every note and even sang the Rush and Cream tunes. This kid is definitely going to be something in the future. The next band up was Lee Roy Parnell, a local Austin blues type. He played slide guitar, the man can definitely play but by this time the crowd was getting restless and was ready for NEM. The worst thing about this guy's set was that it was too long and he invited the CEO of Gibson Guitars on stage to play. I forget the CEO's name but he SUCKED! The man could not play guitar and Parnell kept having him try and do solos, it was awful. Finally after countless jams, Parnell ended his set. The NEM crew was very fast in setting up and arranging the gear. CR and the fellas came on about 11:15PM, CR still has the scraggly beard and long hair, he was wearing a western style denim shirt and jeans, they opened with "Mother Of Stone", maybe it was my imagination but it seemed to be the shortest version of this song I've ever heard but it definitely rocked. The new drummer, Steve D, was about as on target with this song as one can expect for his first show. Next up was "Girl On A Mountain", I don't remember anything that stands out about this song, sounded about the same as previous versions. Then was "40 Days", this one really got the crowd going and after this tune everyone including the band was pumped. Then came "Lost My Driving Wheel", definitely a cool countryish jam, I'm not sure who did this song originally but Chris said it was an old tune. Up next was "Eagles On The Highway", this is a mellow tune with a slower country feel to it, I was diggin it. Then came what I felt was the best new tune, "If You See California", it starts out slow with Chris on the acoustic guitar then builds and they jam it out for awhile; this one will definitely be a staple of the tour. Then came "Sunday Sound" and Audley ripped it up on this one. During the jam he stuck pretty close to Paul's solos but he had a different tone to his guitar. Then came the PCH Sumba and this one allowed Barraco to shine. I couldn't hear him to well since I was in the very front and Audley and Chris' amps were drowning out the keyboards from my position. George Reiff was also able to shine during this tune, you can tell he was definitely carrying the rythym section tonight. They jammed the PCH Sumba into Ride, and on Ride George Reiff and Steve D tore it up. Steve D had a killer drum solo, totally different from Jeremy Stacey, Steve plays with a more technical style, whereas Jeremy had a Ringo/Bonzo thing going; Reiff laid down a really funky bass line through most the song. Audley had a solo or two in this one as well. You could tell Chris was really enjoying himself, the crowd was giving him all kind of love. The band ended on that song but came out a few minutes later for the encore which include "Got Love" and "Key To The Highway", NEM brought out Gordie Johnson, Warren and Danny of Gov't Mule. They tore into an extended version of "Got Love", with Chris singing and playing the harmonica. Chris was all smiles, ear to ear. Warren got in a great slide guitar solo but man was it loud! Audley also soloed, as did Gordie. I've never heard or seen any Big Sugar stuff before but I have to admit I'm not that impressed by Gordie. Once "Got Love" ended, the guys stood around for a second trying to figure out what to play next. I was screaming at the top of my longs, "Snatch It Back" but it was to no avail, instead they played, "Key To The Highway", which had Chris and Warren trading off on vocals. Chris again played harmonica and was really into, it was the happiest I think I've ever seen him on stage, he kept having the guys trade solos, like he didn't want to leave. Once all the guys had done at least 2 solos a piece, they ended the song. Everyone was smiling and laughing, Chris gave Warren a big hug and with that they walked off the stage. They played for about 1hr 45min. For being the first night on the tour with new guys, the band is definitley tight and they are having a great time. I can't wait to hear some recordings from later on in the tour. I know of two people recording this show. There was also several videocameras in the place, I'm not exactly sure who they were with but I don't think it was being taped for commerical release. It was great to see some of ya'll from the board, Steve and Melissa.
Peace,
James
