  • Chris and Paul came out and joined Govt Mule for:
    - Almost Cut My Hair
    - Oh Well
    - Southern Man

  • Paul joined Govt Mule for Afro Blue

  • Performance Notes:
They did Almost Cut My Hair,Oh Well, and Southern Man.I thought Chris and Paul were done with the Mule after Oh Well and then they broke into Southern Man, it was KILLER!!

Well back to NEM's show, man what a show!!Finally heard Hi Speed and Sea of Love, both really rocking tunes, especially Sea of Love.I was really suprised on how heavy it is.Sugaree was a first for me too, really cool tune. The one cover I wanted to hear they played,BLUES POWER!!This song never gets old to me,I can listen to it over and over.Over all NEM is has improved in this past year. The song are tighter and all of them are on exactly the same level.

I only stayed for the Mule's first set.The highlight besides CR and Paul joining them is when they played "I want you(she's so heavy)".Happens to be one of my favs from THe Beatles. The Mule did this song justice.

Well after their first set my wife and I walked out of the Saenger over to CR's bus and just as we were walking up,there's Chris and Kate.So my wife and I said hello and Kate says to my wife,"Oh you're pregnant too!".Jen replied yes and then Kate asked when she was due. While that was going on I looked over at Chris and told what a great show and I would see him for the 3 Colorado shows and congratulated him on his baby.He reached out to shake my hand and said thanks. Then they jumped on the bus and Jen and walked our tired and drunk(me) asses back to our room.

It was good to meet Goldeneye and Thorn.Azalea, where the hell were you?

Big thank you going out to TAPEAPE.Thanks for everything!!!Enjoyed them on the ride home.I will see you in Boulder. peace - [H2O]

what a show (& weekend)!!! i just got in after a 6 hour drive, 4 hrs of sleep & waaay too much partying!!!!! after taking alot longer to get into the city than it should have, we finally made it to the show, & it was everything i expected & more! sugaree & the 2 new songs were a highlight for me & when CR joined mule for those 3 songs, it was an amazing thang. i could see NEM every damn night.

i even converted a few friends, they are totally diggin on chris right now, i love that.

met some great folks ~& steve, i'm sorry we never hooked up!!! i think my getting in late totally screwed that up! im sure we'll have many more opportunities down the road. that is so cool that you ran into Chris & kate @ the bus. i enjoyed seeing her groove out on the side of the stage during "southern man".

does anyone know if chris joined mule on for any songs on saturday @ the voodoo fest? i was hoping i wouldnt miss something like that.

Ian~ i had the best time!!!! thanks for coming down & putting up with me & my friends talk to ya soon. **where was tapeape set up? i wanted to say hello, but i the folks recording in the middle looked at me like i was crazy.

now that i've had some sleep,i remembered a few other cool points of the nite:

there were some fun costumes that nite, i enjoyed having Wilma & Fred Flintstone dancing their asses off in front of me, & wilma was very nice, she offered to take pics of me & my friends @ the show, i spotted cheech & chong, the flight attendant girls, & a very grooving angel down front. oh, & i can't forget the really skinny bearded guy dressed as a woman dancing in the aisle & playing air guitar like there was no tomorrow!! now that was hilarious.

when CR came out during mule, he & warren had a lengthy discussion before they went into "almost cut my hair"....& was chris reading the words during southern man??

i want to go to colorado!!!!!! - [azalea]

Just got in a few hours ago. Can't remember the last time I felt this exhausted. Man, am I worn out. I caught two Robert Randolph shows yesterday. Anybody that's seen him can vouch as far as how draining his shows are ... the guy gives everything he's got and demands the audience give the same in return. I was already running on fumes going in to the House Of Blues last night, but just couldn't help jumping around like a lunatic for another two hours.

0 Nawlins was awesome, but I have to say that I didn't really do a heckuva lot of things aside from seeing bands, eating and drinking. My weekend:

Fri: New Earth Mud, Gov't Mule ('Voodoo After Dark' - Saenger Theater)

Sat: Voodoo Festival - Karl Denson, Cowboy Mouth, Gov't Mule

Sun: Voodoo Festival - Robert Randolph, QOTSA, A Perfect Circle (only caught the last few songs of QOTSA, though)

Sun - Robert Randolph ('Voodoo After Dark' - House Of Blues)

After all that, I'd still go with the three 'New Earth Mule' songs as my highlight of the weekend. "Southern Man" was a real treat, and it was great hearing "ACMH" and "Oh, Well" again. Some random thoughts ...

    - I'm really starting to love "Sea Of Love". Definitely the most rockin song that NEM does (along with "Mother Of Stone"). Kinda sounds like it could've been a Crowes song.

    - While I really hate doing the costume thing (and haven't done so in years), I had a wreath of fake cannibis leaves around my head ... a very simple and low-maintenance 'costume' ... I was a 'pot head'. I was sitting in the second row, left of center, so when Chris came out he saw what was on my head and gave me this big shit-eating grin as if to say "Yeahhhhh!"

    - Nobody mentioned the Mule's costumes ... Raven Black Night (Warren as a cop) and the Pimps (rest of the band all pimped out). Pretty cool.

    - There was this hot chick in a schoolgirl costume standing right in front of Warren (basically between me and Warren) for half the show that was constatly yelling stuff at him. It was cute at first, but she got to be really annoying ... like talking to him in the middle of songs! I mean, can you just get outta the big man's way already?! She had one of those flashing light pins that she ended up pinning to Warren's Police hat. At the end of the show, she was bugging him again (I think she wanted his hat) and Rob caught him telling her to f*** off. Priceless.

    - The Mule set on Sat at Voodoo was pretty much a cookie-cutter setlist (Blindman In The Dark, Thorazine, Rockin Horse, ... Soulshine), but considering how much they've been mixing it up this tour, it was kinda nice to hear on of 'those' sets for a change. Plus, I caught the only pick that Warren managed to clear the stage with, as well as one of Matt's drumsticks. Plucked them both right outta the air, too.

    - Lots of great teases by the Mule both shows (not tio mention robert Randolph as well). I especially liked the Effigy > Don't Fear The Reaper > House of The Rising Sun > Jaws theme > Effigy medley (they actually kept going back and forth between them a few times), and there was a cool "Hocus Pocus" tease as well, I think on Sat. My fave Randolph teases were a two-minute all-instrumental "Hells Bells" tease last night. "Trampled Under Foot" yesterday afternoon was sweet, too.

    - Randolph had like sixteen chicks (from the audience) up to the stage last night at the HOB, all dancing and shakin their thangs. It was like one huge party.

    - Mule may play the best variety of covers, but Randolph does some pretty interesting ones too ... he did "Puple Haze" yesterday afternoon as well as Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" last night (amongst others).

    - Cowboy Mouth was definitely the lowpoint of the weekend. The band itself wasn't terrible, but the lead singer was annoying as hell. He couldn't stop yapping the entire show, trying to get the crowd going. He was like a wedding singer with his own rock band. I couldn't wait for their set to end. Apparantly, they're pretty popular down in Nola ... go figure. Worst band I've seen in a long time. - [ThornInNYPride]

    10/31/03 @ NOLA

Hi Speed Transportation LA City Limit Blues
    Sea Of Love
    Cold Wind Blows
    Blues Power
    Sunday Sound
    Sugaree
    Ride

And so to New Orleans - or Nawlins - or NOLA - or Orleans - or....

After a very late night in Memphis, I was very pleased that 'Northstar' and her friend Traci had decided to make the trip to Nawlins at the last minute!! I had a vehicle, they needed transport - so in a match made in heaven, they kindly drove the 6 hours or so from Memphis, while I slept in the back oblivious to the miles that we were travelling!!! Ladies, I thank you - and never again will I let a bad word be said about woman drivers.... then again, I did have my eyes closed for the whole journey....

Checked into the same hotel as The Dude, DiscoStu and Thorn - but not knowing any of their surnames and having no cell numbers with me (organisation is a wonderful thing!!) I made my way to the infamous Bourbon Street to meet up with CR (Corey) and her Texan friends...... howdy y'all!!

Now Bourbon Street at any time of the day/night/month/year is, I am sure, a sight to behold - but at 6.30pm on Halloween, it was unlike anywhere I have ever seen before!! It was fan-tas-tic!!! Fancy dress costumes everywhere - real snakes/parrots as adornments - lots of skimpy costumes and bare naked flesh ... I thought I had died and gone to some sort of 'voodoo heaven' where all of the women were gorgeous and all of the men were shorter and uglier than me!!! As you can tell, I had already started drinking!!! It was still about 80' outside - which made my evening selection of midlength velvet jacket and lite scarf the ideal choice.... for someone who wanted to try to look really cool whilst sweating like a pig on a spit!!!!!!

Finally managed to hook up with Corey and friends - I was just amazed that all of her Texan friends conformed to the stereotype so much! Even in that heat, to see all of them wearing Stetsons and leather chaps whilst wrestling a bull to the ground in the middle of Bourbon Street was an image I don't think will ever leave me....

Having consumed a little more alcoholic refreshment, purely to quench our thirst of course, we started back down Bourbon Street in the direction of the venue.... just as the Halloween Parade came at us from the opposite direction! With a Jazz band at the front and a whole cavalcade of floats and costumed geeks behind, there really was nothing we could do at this point but stand and wait for them to go past But just that little blast of 'jazz' helped to set the scene for the rest of the time in New Orleans. There is a 'magic' about the place that I have just never felt anywhere else... a 'voodoo' type magic I guess.... Due to the length of the Govt Mule set, it would be several YEARS before we were able to get back onto Bourbon StreetI can only marvel at what we would have missed when we were away.....

Having finally made it to the venue about half an hour before showtime, we took up position as far forward as we could in the all seater venue (about 4 rows back and central) and managed to hook up with the aforementioned Dude/Thorn/Stu as well as meeting up again with Mrs And Mrs TrippyMcMudHead from previous travels to both the Crowes in Atlanta and NEM in Charlotte last year. Always one of the pleasures of this sort of trip is unexpectedly seeing 'old friends' again

The theater was the nicest I had visited on this leg of the journey and for the first time, the stage had a huge 'celtic' type backdrop. As the venue filled up nicely, our band of travelling minstrels appeared and blasted into 'Hi Speed'!

See the St Louis review for my opinion on 'Hi Speed' as an opener, but tonite there was another problem. I'm not sure where it was coming from (and my guess was Paul's guitar), but as Chris powered into the vocals, there was a distinct buzz/distortion that could be heard within the sound. I thought it was whenever Paul was 'chord-ing', but Thorn seemed to think it may have been Chris... either way, it made the opening couple of tracks a little too 'muddy' for my liking. Be interesting to hear how it came out on tape.... Shame really, cos 'Sea Of Love' once again came over very well. This is the one that keeps going round and around in my head. Without me realising it, this is the beat I can hear in the quiet moments; these are the lyrics I can see running in front of my eyes - this is the one that I want to hear most next time I see them! Nothing fancy; just balls out rock 'n roll!! 'In a sea of love, that's where I'll stay, in a sea of love...' or words to that effect

This was my first exposure to 'Cold Wind Blows' and I thought it was stunning. Slower and more measured than the first two tracks, this one builds with a real mystical feel to it - and I'm talking 'Kashmir' mystical here, not 'Mint Tea' mystical. Like I said, I've only heard it the once, but I was very, very taken in by it. This one is going to be very special

There were a number of Mule fans that I had been talking to beforehand who were waiting to be convinced by the Mud. 'Sea of Love' had done a good job at getting them nodding knowingly; 'Cold Wind..' had them stroking their beards in a 'strokey beard type way' - but what really grabbed them was when the band tee-ed up 'Blues Power' with the slow twiddly intro and then ripped it apart for the next 5 minutes or so!!! Big smiles all around, much slapping of backs and shaking of hands - more converts!

'Sunday Sound' can sit anywhere in the setlist and still work. It needs no particular place; no particular song to precede or follow - whatever else is happening around it, 'Sunday Sound' ALWAYS sounds good. Tonight was no exception. There is a 'feel good' to this song that just makes you smile, and just when you think it's getting a little too close to 'pop-cheesiness' up steps Paul Stacey to solo the thing out of the theater and onto another plane.... Dancing our asses off?? You bet!!!

When you are playing support, it's gotta be a brave decision to use cover tunes in your set - I mean, surely you want people to hear 'your' songs. To use 2 covers in a 7 song set is extremely bold - but at the moment, I don't think CR cares whether they are his songs or whether somebody else wrote them. At the moment, he just wants to put out the best set of music he can. 'Sugaree' sure was perfect for tonight. Any Mule fan who had previously refused to budge was now up on their feet. It was a strange experience to look around a full theater and see everybody standing and applauding the 'support band'.... made you feel proud... in a corny, cheesy sort of way!!!

Shame they finished on 'Ride' IMHO (See St Louis review!), but others seemed to like it.

Of the 3 shows on this leg, this was the most powerful. Take away the bookends of 'Hi Speed' and 'Ride' and you had about 40 minutes of pure musical bliss. I don't mean to be harsh about the other 2 songs, but maybe I am just worn out on them? When you have an armoury as large as CR's it seems a shame to keep limiting your options. Just my opinion though, and like assholes, everybody's got one... (at least they didn't play PCH Somba!!!)

The applause as they left was well deserved - but nothing like the applause CR and Paul received after their next visit to the stage! At the end of the first Mule set (which funny costumes or no funny costumes was still dull...), our dynamic duo appeared to liven up proceedings with renditions of 'Almost Cut My Hair', 'Oh Well' and 'Southern Man'. Now in St Louis a couple of days earlier, I'd heard 'Dreams' when I never thought I would. I could have travelled home happy on that, but for them to now roll out 'Almost Cut My Hair' in front of my very own ears had me on the point of spontaneous combustion - only the fear of what such an act would do to the velvet made me control myself!!!! I LOVE the Crosby/Robinson live version of this song, and whilst with Wally Hayes and CR trading vocals, I wouldn't quite put this evenings rendition into that category, it was still mighty fine! 'Oh Well' was fun - and 'Southern Man' really stole the show this evening. Now I admit to not being familiar with this song (I know, shame on me...), but even on first hearing tonite, you could tell it was a belter. When CR sings something he can really get his teeth into, it is a privilege to be there. He should sing 'Southern Man' more often!

Despite the urge to return to Bourbon Street, I decided to remain and grin and bear the second Mule set - I mean, it was Halloween and 'special' things had been muted... unfortunately they failed to materialise - apart from Paul and George Laks joining them to twiddle their way through something called 'Afro Blue'. Whilst personally it did nothing for me, it really did show off just how f**kin' good Paul Stacey is, for the jazz-type twiddling of 'Afro' to the blues of '32-20' to the rock of 'Mother of Stone'. Is there nothing this man can't take in his stride??

There was a debate recently about Marc vs Paul.

Well... one of them is a musician who hasn't really received the credit he deserves for his previous musical output. He is a phenomenal guitarist who is able to add style and emotion to any song. He is also the perfect foil for Chris Robinson and together they make the sweetest music.

The other one is Marc Ford!!! (Flame retardent clothing on...)

The rest of the weekend was a blur of alcohol, food, alcohol, casino, bed, alcohol, casino, food, football, alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, and 'voodofest' which the Dude generously 'comp-ed' me in for on the Sunday night. (QOTSA - OK. A Perfect Circle - Alright. White Stripes - Surprisingly good! Particularly their cover of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'!) It pretty much finished in the early hours of Monday morning with the Dude playing the slots with no real interest and me struggling to keep my eyes open as the long weekend and total lack of sleep caught up with me!!! It's a shame Halloween was a couple of nights earlier, cos I was in full on zombie mode by now!!! Still, my physical wreck managed to haul itself onto the London bound flight, via Dallas, and I slept all the way!! Didn't even managed to stay awake for take off....

New Orleans was a great way to finish. Cool town, great friends (old and new), memorable show! Once again, the journey to follow the Mud had returned far more than I could have ever expected. You travel in hope, rather than expectation... but CR has never once let me down - and with some full on 'Muddiness' in Boulder and Denver still to come in a week's time, I have no reason to believe he's gonna start to do that anytime soon!! - [goldeneye]
