  • Chris and Paul joined Govt Mule for Woke Up This Morning and Shake Your Moneymaker

  • Performance Notes:
I was lucky enough to attend last night, and even better got an autograph from Chris.

It was a very cool show, except for when they tried to take my camera away? I don't understand what happened with this. There was nothing on the ticket and they saw it at the door and asked me, " That's just a camera right?" Anyhow, got several good pictures before that.

Sunday Sound was my favorite part of the night, but mother of stone was rockin' too. Woke up this morning and shake your money maker was a nice treat as well.

I got to meet Paul, who was very friendly and told me the album should be out in the spring.

    Overall, a night to remember...

Thanks to Chris and NEM! - [jeff]

    ----- --- -

So from St Louis to Memphis - via Gracelands! Bizarre experience, but definitely recommended to anybody who has never done it! Love him or loathe him, Elvis was essential in getting music to where it is today - and for that, I thank him!

Having done Gracelands and checked into the hotel, I found myself walking a couple of blocks to the venue with this loud bass and drum noise ringing in my ear. Only as I approached the venue did it all become apparent. Tonights show would be in the open air, and the noise I could hear was the Mule 'checking their sound'!

I picked up my 'will call' ticket and stood on the back of a flat bed truck which afforded a great view of the stage, waiting to see the Mud come and 'check their sound' as well! Unfortunately, given the lateness of the hour (6.30pm with onstage time at 7.30pm), only 2 guys (Paul and George R) made it onto the stage to give a quick blast of their respective instruments, before disappearing.

Found Northstar and her friend Traci already in line again, and proceeded into the venue which Lilsexie had already managed to sneak into.....

Whilst standing down the front I spotted an old Crow friends (Ozone) from many moons ago and his friends (BigT and partner!), so the gap before showtime disappeared as we reminisced and caught up! One of the great things about travelling... you are never alone

Once again the Troubadors took the stage and blew my mind! "Mother of Stone" is, in anybody's book, a great f**kin' opener!! Tonight was no exception as the blew apart the night time sky and scared the hell out of anybody within earshot!! Despite the lack of proper soundcheck, these fellas were on the money from the start and "MOS" did everything to grab the Mule fans and make them pay attention.

When you only have a short amount of time to impress, playing cover tunes always has to be a calculated risk. Playing two back to back would be dangerous - for anybody but CR! I can think of no other artist who can take a cover and make it sound like his own. With a voice as distintive and strong as his, he can make eon old songs like 'Got Love..' and 'Lazy Days' seem like they were written yesterday - the fact they are 'covers' doesn't even enter into the thought process.... Now, they are CR songs - as much a part of his armoury as "Safe.." or "Train Robbers".

"Sunday Sound" was magnificent! I have no idea why, but this song continues to be 'special' to me! Under the open skies and warm Memphis evening, "Sunday Sound" was as good as ever and Paul's solo to the end must surely be one of the best ever? Now I admit to having consumed some alcohol by this point - but I am pretty sure it was flawless... the tapers will prove me right or wrong in due course!!!

To follow they pulled out "Beginners and Sinners" from the closet and again, in the warm open air, the song just seemed right. With choral accompaniment from many in the crowd, "Beginners..." was a perfect song for the evening.

Whilst Boa's list tell's you that "PCH Somba" was next, I am pretty sure that it was ditched and they went straight into "Ride". I distinctly remember seeing CR briefing the rest of the band and telling them that because of time constraints, they needed to go directly into "Ride"... I stand to be corrected by the tapers, but trust me, I would be likely to forget "PCH..." if it was played...

"Ride" was "Ride" and then they were gone! 5 songs different from the previous night in a 6 song set?? That's why I will always travel to see this guy / band!!

For the Mud/Mule collaborations, we were treated to "Woke Up This Morning" and a storming "Shake Your Moneymaker"!

And it was great to see Alvin Youngblood Hart join the Mule for their encore. Very, very talented guy! Check him out sometime soon when he is in your area - you will not be disappointed!!

Drinks etc ensued on Beale Street, before the long drive to Memphis....[goldeneye]
