- Chris and Paul joined Govt Mule for:
  • Dark End Of The Street
  • 32-20 Blues
  • Dreams

  • Performance Notes:
    What a show!

I was really hoping to see Chris join the Mule and play Salvation or H2H, but looking back on the evening, seeing Dreams was amazing, and Chris playing the harmonica on 32/20 Blues was awesome, very nice to see that again.

I am at work now on about 3 1/2 hours sleep. The best part, though I only have to make it until noon, and I'm off for New Orleans. Met a lot of really cool people, mostly Mule fans though. I think everyone was impressed with the Mud by the end of their set.

It looked like a lot of tapers too. Peace - [Deneye]

    ----- --- -

Sorry, I know this is late but finally I get to see a PC again - but only after travelling all the way back to the U of K!!! Where the hell did that week go?? Happy days..... anyway, back to the thread!

Arrived late into St Louis from the UK which meant I had barely enough time to shower and change before heading out with friends for drinks and food! Fortunately my 'second wind' kicked in pretty early and I managed to survive until about 2.30am which meant, taking into account the time difference, I had been up for 24 hours! Great evening out though including a visit to a very cool independent record store - picked up the Stones 'Sympathy for the Devil' DVD and finally got the Black Keys first album... but forgot a whole host of other goodies that I wanted to lay my hands on! Never mind... less to carry...

Managed to see a little more of St Louis during the following day, then before you knew it - it was showtime!! My hotel was directly opposite the venue, so it was a short walk to find LilSexie, Northstar and friends already in line. Once inside, 'the buzz' really started to kick in. This is what it was all about. The arranging of hotels etc is a chore; the inside of an airport / plane holds no thrill for me - but when you stand in front of a stage and the Nag starts to slow burn in front of you, then nothing else really matters.

The place seemed pretty full from where I was standing down the front, with a lot of Mule fans who seemed interested in hearing the Mud stuff for the first time.

So on the troubadors came to loud applause - and the fact that it was only a little after 7.30pm made not the slightest bit of difference!!

"Hi-Speed" is OK as a starter, but the up and down pacing to it seems to jar a little too much for me as a first track. Just as the blood starts pumping and the feet start stamping you get to the little 'dreamy' bits - and personally I would look ridiculous doing little wavy motions with my hands above my head, so 'Hi-Speed' is always a bit of a start/stop affair! But the sound was suprisingly good - and hell, it was another start to a show... and the best was yet to come - in so many ways!

"Sea Of Love" is a stormer! Big meaty riffs; angry lyrics; 2 thumping drum beats to usher in the chorus - if you've not heard it yet, then I envy you. I would love to hear this song for the first time again And already CR was singing his balls off! It must be great for him to be back on the road and to be getting such a great reaction to his new stuff - and the band looked like they loved playing this as well. Very tight already with George Rieff and Jeremy particularly strong together.

To follow "Sea.." with "Train Robbers" was perfect. From a stormer to something which allows the vocals to take more of the foreground. This song has really grown on me in the last couple of months and the way it slow burns throughout before exploding at the end is particularly pleasing on the ear!

Then just as you started to think that life was perfect and things really couldn't any better, he goes and blows all of your theories again by raising the bar even higher! As the slide of "No Expectations" began, I just stood there with a huge smile on my face applauding (Sorry Tapers!!). I saw it twice on the 'Mud tour' I did last year (including a radio show exclusive in Knoxville that Corvus helped me sneak in to) and it was a highlight then. Much has happened to me in that time, and this song could have pretty much run as a soundtrack to a couple of months of the last year for me, so I guess it will always be 'special'.

I'd heard "Girl On A Mountain" at BBKings and felt it was a little 'uneven' and didn't gel. Clearly the fellas have been working it hard, cos tonight it sound magnificent! It's another that has a 'swooping/soaring/singalong' chorus, with Paul and George R providing excellent backing vocals! It just amazes me the catalogue of songs that CR is building up here (and I hadn't heard 'Cold Wind Blows' at that point!!). I don't know what it is about them / me, but at this time I just can't think of anything I would rather listen to.

"Girl.." held it's own with "No Expectations" due to the new nature of the tune and until this point, everything had been heading in one direction and that was up, up and then.. UP some more!! "T for Texas" was fun and seemed to get everybody footstamping and smiling... and then came 'PCH Somba'.... I guess the direction had to change at some point.

I'll openly admit that I've never been a fan of this and the 'PCH/Ride' combo just doesn't work for me either. Don't get me wrong, when "Ride" starts it is difficult not to start dancing your ass off (particularly when you have travelled so far and you know that time is short), but if CR ever decided to do a 'dream setlist' competition ala the Crowes from many moons back, neither 'PCH Somba' or 'Ride' would be on my entry currently. Maybe it is just overuse? I mean, has there been a show on this tour yet where he didn't play Ride? I'm pretty sure it's been on most if not all of them - and it was also one of the staples of the second set last fall. Maybe he is trying to appeal to the 'jamband' mentality of the Mule fan - maybe he thinks the simple refrain is a good thing to leave buzzing around their heads rather than some of the more complex arrangements. Whatever the masterplan is, I hope it works... For tonight, it was OK. By it's third outing in three days on Friday in New Orleans, it would be starting to wear a little thin for me. But that's OK - chance you take I guess when you are lucky enough to see a run of shows.

General feedback from the Mule fans on the floor was very favourable - lets just hope NEM get that second album out soon. The live shows, as we all know, are a world away from the first album.

As well we know, when the Mud finishes and the Mule starts, the delights are far from over - cos CR and Paul Stacey come out and do a couple of tunes at the end of the Mule's first set! Tonight was no exception "Dark End Of The Street" kicked things off before an old Muddy Waters/Skip James cover "32-20 Blues" had Paul pulling some mean fingers and Chris predominantly huffing and puffing into the harmonica. It sure was good to hear him getting his tongue into that again - suprising really how little he tends to play it in the Mud shows. Still the best was yet to come though and as with "No Expectations" earlier, the first chords of "Dreams" left me speechless. I guess I just never thought I would get to see CR do this live. I thought that time was long gone - yet here I was in St Louis with good people around me, hearing yet another song that you just can't help thinking he was born to sing. Fantastic...!

So first night down and it was a great one Tomorrow was the drive to Memphis and with a little jetlag finally catching up with me, I decided to take the short walk to the hotel and crash after the Mule finished their second set.

Quick word about the Mule... very talented professionals. Nice to see Andy Hess again - great big bass noise from the fella... Apart from that they bored me to death... sorry Mule fans! No point trying to hide it or coat it in any other way! When the Crowes or the Mud 'jam' they do it within the structure and context of a 'song'. I couldn't help thinking that with the Mule, the song just got in the way of the 'jams'. I'd been told the 'live Mule' was a whole different experience to the records that I had got - and it is, it seems to go on forever and ever... Anyway, enough about the Mule - Memphis and New Orleans to follow....[goldeneye]
